Trail Treats at White Clay Trail Run

All Smiles at Hole in the Wall

The annual White Clay Trail Run took place this past weekend for the first time since the pandemic, with beautiful weather and fast running!

Starting at Ocean View Hotel, on the beach in Coffee Bay, runners and walkers were greeted with a beautiful sunrise but a stiff headwind as they made their way to Hole in the Wall, the turning point on the 21km route. Steep, cliff-side running, kept the athletes on their toes as they navigated the goat and cattle paths that have been carved out of the rolling green hills for centuries, creating the perfect single track for the athletes.

The first runner to the turning point was Spinathi Qukula from Coffee Bay. The undulating terrain was no match for Qukula, who was untouchable with his quick running and local knowledge. Passing landmarks like Black Rock, “Baby Hole in the Wall” and of course THE Hole in the Wall, are beautiful distractions along the grueling route. Qukula held his lead all the way home to the finish line at White Clay Resort closely followed by Thembelani Muakwendlu in second and Thulani Mkoshimbini making up third in the men’s category.

The ladies had a tussle for first place between Nicole Wiggill and youngster, Emma Le Roux. Wiggil who is no stranger to the White Clay Trail Run kept the pace and took the win from Le Roux in second place and Joanne Clowes taking third.

Thank you to the Coffee Bay community for supporting out runners along the route!

As the morning dragged on and the heat became something of an issue for some, a cold Twizza at the finish line was a welcome relief for many as the runners regaled the beauty and toughness of the course they had completed. For the past 18 years, the White Clay Trail Run has drawn runners from across South Africa. The Coffee Bay region is unrilved in its beauty which brings back runner’s year after year.

Aloe Adventure would like to thank White Clay, Twizza, Ngcwanguba Store, Out The Green Box, Priority-Care Ambulance, and Racefood for their contribution to making this event not only a successful one but also one that will be remembered by the runners for years to come.

FOMO? Keep the last weekend of August 2023 open for the 19th edition of this spectacular trail run along South Africa’s Wild Coast.
